Prom Night - Trailer

First thing to say about this is that it is NOT a remake of the 1980 horror movie Prom Night starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Is this a good thing? Time will tell, there has been alot of fuss over horror movie remakes and at least this cannot fall into the criticism of the 70's/80's horror movie remakes automatically get. But they have lifted the title. Basic synopsis:

Donna’s senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life. After surviving a horrible tragedy, she has finally moved on and is enjoying her last year of high school. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns deadly, there is only one person who could be responsible…a man she thought was gone forever. Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of an obsessed killer, and survive a night “to die for.”

Prom Night is on general cinema release in the UK from the 6th June 2008

Bring Burn Gorman / Owen Harper Back To Torchwood

I am sure you have all seen this - but I would not be doing my job if i didn't mention this:

Yes those people at www.burn-gorman.com have set up an online petition to resurrect Owen Harper in Torchwood again. They obviously don't believe the rumour that he is coming back as a radioactive superman

Ghost Game - Shocking Asian Horror

Dispite the rather lame title Ghost Game is possibly the most controversial Thai horror movie ever made and it is coming to DVD in the UK in June.

Seeking to utilise the reality TV format and twist it into the horror genre, much like My Little Eye, but this is rather much on a grander scale.

11 people are locked inside a war museum, and have to perform seances and summon demons for their tasks instead of the usual childish tasks on other reality TV shows. Their ultimate goal is to complete their tasks and be the last person left inside the museum, with the winner taking home a cash prize of 5 million Baht (roughly £80k), the highest amount of money ever offered on a Thai game show. It is then that the inevitable killings begin.

Starring a cast consisting of actual contestants from the real-life American Idol-style Thai TV game show, “Academy Fantasia”, the dark and disturbing Ghost Game puts a “Big Brother” meets “Most Haunted” spin on the classic “trapped in a haunted house” horror movie theme to great effect.

Ghost Game (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£12.99) by Showbox Home Entertainment/Cine Asia on 23rd June 2008.

The Abandoned

The Abandoned is a Spanish horror film from Nacho Cerdà which promices to be more than a gory slasher flick.

Marie (Anastasia Hille - The Hole, Cutting It) returns to Russia, where her mother's dead body has been found under bizarre circumstances. She never knew her, having been adopted and brought to America as a baby. The only clue as to what might have happened is an isolated, abandoned farm in the mountains that supposedly belonged to her natural parents. Being the only next of kin, she inherits the place, but no one will take her there as the local superstitions state that the area is…DAMNED. A cycle of horror comes to fruition, as she learns the real reason she has been summoned for this perverse reunion with her past… And the brutal secret behind her family.

The Abandoned is a bloody tale that sits in the genre of 'haunted house horror' but manages to subvert the obvious trappings with it's shocking story and high production values.

Set for DVD release on 19 May 2008 courtesy of Momentum Pictures.

The cast headed by Karel Roden (The Bourne Supremacy, Hellboy, Blade 2) and Anastasia Hille (The Hole - one of my Favourite British Horror Films).

John Barrowman Autographs

I have been asked how do I get John Barrowmans Autograph?

Well, as you may have seen on this site the collectomania collectors fair is having signing sessions with John Barrowman himself, this will be the best way to get an autograph and meet the man himself.

Second option is eBay. Bit riskey though. There are many prints of autographs and fakes, if you do buy an autograph through ebay you should be careful and check the credientials of the seller.

Three - If you are a chancer you could try writing to John care of his agent with a a 5×7 or 8×10 stamped self-addressed envelope :

John Barrowman
2d Wimpole Street
London W1G 0EB
England UK

But there are no guarentees with this method, he is a very busy man. I believe he does try to answer fan mail though.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The Mummy and the Mummy Returns weren't exactly horror movies, more action adventure, I would love to see someone develop a kick ass gorefest Mummy movie, I suspect I have a long wait.

On the strength of the first 2 movies I feel I should mention the 3rd movie of the revived classic Universal Horror brand. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Unlike the first 2 movies this is NOT written and directed by Stephen Sommers. In the 3rd film Rob Coen takes the helm.

Brendan Fraser comes back as Rick O'Connell, John Hannah steps away from the airline adverts and returns as his brother in law Johnathan and Evelyn is recast as Maria Bello. Pity as Rachel Weisz really made the films. Arnold Vosloo (?) is also gone, this time the Mummy is Han Emperor played by Jet Li.

Stephen Sommers (director of the first 2 films) disgraced himself with the complete hash he made of Van Helsing. It could have been another acceptable action / monster movie, but instead became a complete pile of (INSERT WORD HERE)

BTW the best movie that Stephen Sommers did was Deep Rising - time for a sequel I think.

Currently US release dates are 1st August

The Backwoods

THE BACKWOODS, for a horror movie is brave from the start. Weighing in at a stonking 2 and a half hours this is not the lightweight, low budget, all blood and ‘teenagers' horror film that the title might suggest. Instead The Backwoods harks back to the best cult classics. Directed by the highly acclaimed Koldo Serra, who has collected several awards in European festivals over the past decade, and starring not 1 but 2 BAFTA winners.

The plot sets out during the summer of 1978 where Norman (Paddy Considine) and Lucy (Virginia Ledoyen) are spending the summer holidays with their friend Paul (Gary Oldman) in the north of Spain. Very much off the beaten track, they seem set for a peaceful holiday. But remembering this a horror film things take a descent into horror when they discover a deformed girl locked away in a cabin in the woods. Filthy and unable to talk, the girl is obviously terrified and so the couple decide to take her to the police. A group of local villagers however have other ideas and refuse to let the girl go, pursing the holidaymakers through the forest and taking them into a whirlpool of violence.

THE BACKWOODS, a dark tale of revenge set for DVD release on 19 May 2008 courtesy of Momentum Pictures.

Cloverfield Monster Movie On DVD 9th June

The first big movie event of 2008, Cloverfield, will rampage onto DVD on June the ninth 2008.

Just in time for Father's Day kids

Monsters rampaging in a city is always a good start for a movie event ( unless you are making the 1990's version of Godzilla, in which case they should have done something else). But Cloverfield is clever and tells the story Blair Witch style with a hand held camera footage point of view.

New York attracts this kind of thing I have noticed, Also what has the poor Statue Of Liberty done to movie makers so that it's fate is so varied and final amongst movie makers.

Watch the video:

http://greenroom-press.com/clients/Paramount/home_ents/cloverfield/movies/Trailer_med.wmv

Brought to us by J.J Abrahams (the force behind LOST)

So what is so special about the special edition Cloverfield DVD?

There is over 2 hours of bonus materials including ‘Alternative Endings’, ‘The Making of Cloverfield’, ‘Cloverfield Visual Effects’ and commentary from Director Matt Reeves. The two features I love best in these SE dvds are outtakes (sadly missing from this dvd) and the alternative ending, so I just cannot wait to see this.

Indies Crystal Skull at British Museum

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is released to cinemas on 22 May 2008 With Crystal Skulls being the one enigma in the new film here is some information about the Crystal Skill at the British Museum in LondonWhat is itA life-size carving of a human skull made from a single block of rock crystal a clear colourless variety of quartz It was acquired by the Museum in 1897 purporting to be an ancient Mexican object However scientific research conducted by the Museum has established that the skull was most likely produced in the 19th century in Europe As such the object is not an authentic pre-Columbian artefact How did it enter the collectionThe skull was purchased by the Museum from Tiffany and Co New York in 1897 At the time of its purchase the skull was said to have been brought from Mexico by a Spanish officer before the French occupation in 1863 It was sold to an English collector and acquired at his death by Eugne Boban a French antiquities dealer later becoming the property of Tiffany and Co The skull was exhibited for many years at the Museum of Mankind in Piccadilly which housed the British Museums Ethnographic collection it is currently on permanent display at the British Museum in the Wellcome Trust Gallery room 24What scientific research has been undertakenThe British Museum has examined the skull several times between 1950 and 1990 In 1996 an on-going collaborative project focusing on the British Museums skull and a skull in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute Washington DC was started Contrary to popular belief there are currently no scientific techniques which can be used to accurately establish when a stone or mineral object was produced Research has therefore focused on how the skulls were carved where the quartz originated from and what is known about the early history of the skulls Observations made under a binocular microscope and in a scanning electron microscope suggest that the techniques of carving used to produce the skulls post-dated the Aztec period The tool marks on the skulls do not match those on other Aztec period rock-crystal objects which were invariably carved by hand It is most likely that the British Museum skull was worked with a rotary wheel or jewellers wheel which was unknown in the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans The research also suggests that the rock crystal used in the manufacture of the British Museums skull may have come from Brazil an area outside of the ancient trade network of MexicoDo others existThere is a larger white quartz skull in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute Washington DC and a number of other large skulls in private ownership There are also a number of smaller rock crystal skulls It seems highly unlikely that any are genuine Aztec objects Large rock crystal skulls first began to surface in public and private collections during the second half of the nineteenth century and an increasing number of large and small quartz skulls have become known in recent decades mostly in private hands However no such skull has ever been reported from well-documented official archaeological excavation Archival research has in addition produced a link between the British Museums skull and another rock crystal skull in the Muse du Quai Branly Paris Both skulls passed through the hands of the French dealer Eugne Boban raising suspicions regarding their provenanceWhy were the skulls producedIt is impossible to be sure why the skulls were produced It maybe that they were produced to satisfy demand in the US and Europe in the nineteenth century when interest in collecting Mexican material was at its height Are there any genuine Aztec crystal skullsIt seems unlikely since no quartz crystal skull has ever been found on any of the many well-documented official archaeological excavations of ancient sitesDid the Aztecs make these kinds of objectsSkulls and skull imagery feature in Aztec art at the time of the first contact with the Spanish in 1519 However they were usually carved in relief in basalt as architectural elements rather than produced in rock crystal or white quartz Do they have special powersThere are some who claim that crystal skulls have healing qualities emit energy have the ability to convey vital information or are repositories of ancient wisdom Large quartz crystal skulls have generated great interest and fascination since they began to surface in public and private collections during the second half of the nineteenth century The British Museum views the skull in its collection as an enigmatic object of great interest but with no supernatural properties What is the British Museums response to the new movieAs entertainment the movie will surely appeal to the public but it is very much a work of fiction We hope however that it will encourage visitors to see the skull at the British Museum and to learn more about Aztec culture
Stephen King's 1408

Thanks to the virtue of LOVEFILM online DVD rental service (not Sky Plus this time) I finally got around to see last years 1408 a horror film based on the book of the same name by Stephen King.

My experience of films of Stephen King books is mixed at best. The best adaptation I can think of is Stephen King's IT, with Tim Curry, if they are ever tempted to remake this I will not be happy, if they want to do anything they can fix the ending which really lets the ‘film' down.

In 1408 John Cusack plays Mike Enslin a novelist (please can someone direct me to a Stephen King plot that doesn't involve a novelist as the protagonist) of 'factual' books about haunted hotels. Originally trying to seek the truth of life after death for his own needs, he has become a hack novelist who has lost all faith in everything.

1408 refers to a haunted room in a hotel in New York that has been responsible for a multitude of deaths. The room has been closed by the hotel, but using a legal loophole Mike manges to reserve it for one night.

Of course the room is actually haunted and proceeds to make Mike's life a living hell. But the movie covers much more than this. It covers a number of ‘jump in your seat' horror cliches, but has a powerful storyline and a nice little twist.

More Torchwood Cast at Collectormania 13

Eve Myles will be joining John barrowman at Collectormania this bank holiday weekend in Milton Keynes.

Rumour has it that a further 5 cast members will appear at the collectors fair. This includes Kai Owen. This has NOT been confirmed by Collectormania on their main page at http://www.collectormania.com/ to date.

Both John and Eve will appear on Sunday only. I should suspect that if other cast members make an apperance that they will also appear on Sunday.

Dr Who fans will have the chance to meet 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy on Monday, and Nicholas Courtney (The Brigader of UNIT in the classic Dr Who series) on Saturday.

Keep an eye out on the official site for more news updates. I hope to post any changes in good time here
