» Fiji Water, tacos and going “green”
8/May/2008 18:37 from Marc Gunther
As a reporter covering business and the environment, I don’t want to let the perfect become the enemy of the good. We should cheer, or at least politely applaud, the small changes that companies make to lighten their environmental footprint. But we ought not to fool ourselves into believing that incremental change is adequate to the tasks ahead—of slowing down climate change, dealing with water issues, or eventually making our economy sustainable. Today’s Sustainability column looks at changes made by Taco Bell and Fiji Water. You’ll see that I’m unimpressed by what's happening at T..

» Michael Klare: Declining Energy Resources Spur Increasing Global Conflict
7/May/2008 19:12 from Corporate Watchdog Radio
CWR co-host Francesca Rheannon speaks with Hampshire College Professor Michael Klare about his new book, Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy . Klare defines the term "resource nationalism," whereby access to energy increasingly drives global politics. For example, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline runs from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, through Georgia, thereby circumventing Russia. In the interview conducted last week, Klare predicted possible conflict over energy access between Russia and Georgia, ensnaring the US. As this episode of CWR was in produ..

» Food companies - hear the sound of the oncoming train and get out of the way!
6/May/2008 00:00 from Mallen Baker's Blog
6 May 2008 - A few years ago, I remember hearing the reaction of certain food companies to the suggestion that rising levels of obesity in the population were going to be an issue for them. That reaction was abrupt, aggressive and fearful - as though the mere suggestion might bring it to pass. I fear that the same reaction might come about with the inevitable focus that will come onto them with the growing global food crisis. As far as I can see, the Millennium Development Goals to eliminate poverty are already a busted flush. Whatever tortuously slow progress was being made will be wiped out..

» U.S. and Europe must slash biofuels targets, Sachs says
5/May/2008 15:22 from Business of Green
Does the European Union need to slash its biofuels target to help lower global food prices? EU policy makers insist that the role played by the use of farmlands to grow biofuels in the trade bloc is minor. They say that only 2 percent of cereals grown in Europe go to biofuels, whereas in the [...]
» Exxon, the Rockefellers, and the Future of Big Oil
5/May/2008 13:59 from Joel Makower: Two Steps Forward
Last week, the Rockefeller family made an historic challenge to Exxon Mobil Corp., the company founded by John D. Rockefeller in 1870 (as Standard Oil), and in which dozens of family members still hold stock. The challenge came in the form of a shareholder resolution to require an independent chairman of Exxon's board of directors, so that the company can better maximize long-term shareholder value in a rapidly changing energy environment. Making the board chair independent of the CEO may seem a technical governance matter, but it has great significance. The family argued that having a board ..

The relative success of the Vice Fund is a reminder that companies can still make a profit on the addictions of smokers, drinkers, gamblers and arms buyers. The children of darkness can sometimes be wiser - socially responsible investing can indeed cost something to a portfolio. For example, I have joined in questioning alcohol screens . It's therefore interesting when good CSR practices seem to provide a proxy for the solvency of financial institutions. In January , Ceres issued a report that grades large banks on climate change issues . It puts European banks at the top of the list - HSBC (7..
» Michael Milken, Act II
4/May/2008 01:19 from Marc Gunther
Michael Milken throws a helluva party. His Milken Institute global conference in LA last week attracted such luminaries as Nobel Peace prize winner Muhammad Yunus, human genome sequencer Craig Venter, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and no fewer than four winners of the Nobel prize in economics. Business guys Eric Schmidt, Sam Zell, Eli Broad, Steve Wynn and T. Boone Pickens all spoke, as did tennis great Andre Agassi, music legend Quincy Jones and comedian, writer and actor John Cleese. There was no way to see and hear it all, but here are some things that struck me as interesting… On the U.S. ..

» Median Pay of CSR Workers in UK is $80-$120K
3/May/2008 14:09 from CSRNYC
May 2, 2008. Of surveyed CSR workers in the UK in 2007, 15 percent earned more than $160,000 and 4 percent earned more than $240,000. The median income was $80,000-$120,000, with 38 percent of salaries in this range. Dated March 2008, the first-ever survey of UK CSR salaries was conducted in late 2007 by the Acona consultancy, Acre Resources recruiting and the Ethical Performance newsletter. Company vs. Consulting Salaries The survey shows that even with their bonuses, consultants tended to earn less than CSR employees in companies. This suggests that companies prefer to have the sensitive CS..

» Timberland And Stonyfield Farms--Two Little Guys Showing The Big Guys How It's Done

This week, I hosted a panel at the Ceres Conference at which Jeff Swartz, the CEO of Timberland , the boot company, and Gary Hirshberg, the CEO of Stonyfield Farms , the organic yogurt company, answered questions about the role of business in society. Prior to the panel, I spoke with them about sustainable consumption. I was very pleasantly surprised. Rather than the usual canned answers one often gets from CEOs at these events, both these Red Sox fans proved to be deeply committed, not to selling less shoes or yogurt, but to sustainable consumption and enlightened consumerism as a potential w..

» KKR meets Environmental Defense
1/May/2008 15:32 from Marc Gunther
Interesting partnership announced today—private equity firm KKR joining with Environmental Defense Fund to come up with tools for measuring the environmental footprint of KKR’s portfolio companies. It’s the topic of today’s Sustainability column . Here’s how it begins: Private equity firms are renowned — and occasionally denounced — for squeezing costs out of companies they buy. Their investors say buyout funds help the economy become more efficient, and build shareholder value. Their critics allege that they do so by exploiting workers, avoiding taxes and polluting the ..
