GDS No.30 - SUBMISSIONS ARE OPEN - January 2010In 2010 Going Down Swinging turns 30 years old, and to celebrate we're producing a very special anniversary 30th edition, to be launched in a series of festival events this August and September.

GDS No.30 will feature new poetry, short fiction, comic art, and spoken word from around the world in a bumper book / CD edition. We will be welcoming very special guest editors to the production table, including some illustrious GDS alumni, plus guest spoken word editors from all continents. New commissioned works, two global CDs of live and studio spoken word, and a haiku section edited by co-founder Myron Lysenko, are just some of the treats in store!

We are now calling for submissions of poetry, short fiction / non-fiction, flash, comic art, haiku and haiga, and spoken word recordings.

Head to the Submissions page to download the Guidelines and Cover Sheets and send us your work. Submissions for this issue will close on 31st March.

Two great cartoonists with their own distinct voices. Uncle Neale has done the hard yards in the alt comix scene and shares his knowledge as a lecturer at Holmesglen TAFE with the yoof of the nation. Jase harper has recently made the move to Melbourne from the seedy Brisbane scene and is flexing his illustration and comix muscles in a new town.

It should be a lively hour of good comix talk.

The 'man at the crossroads' Paul Gravett (if you don't know the reference you need to read more of Eddie Campbell's Alec comics - The Years Have Pants) writes some great articles for the British and wider European press. He also curates, ponders and proselytises for the medium.

He's doing a round of best ofs and featured a few Australian works.

Starting with a special NYE edition on the 31st Dec at 5pm TheComicSpot will be going weekly for the duration of January 2010.

That means 5 shows in the next 6 weeks!

Bruce Mutard interview and Word Balloons at Second Shore

The grand uncle of Melbourne comics - Philip Bentley - has posted an interview with Bruce Mutard up at the Second Shore blog. It's an addendum to a feature length interview Phil did with Bruce some time back in the first issue of Word Balloons. It gives an update on where Bruce is with his work and some of the processes he's gone through in working with Allen & Unwin. There's also mention of some interesting sounding books coming out through Macmillan next year.

Under his Second Shore moniker Phil produces the fantastic self published magazine 'Words Balloons' twice yearly. Always featuring long interviews with Australian comic folk, recollections of his life as a comics stalwart, as well as reviews of new releases.

If you don't have Word Balloons on your shelf you should go buy some.

A casual converstaion behind the scenes in the house of Tango.

Bernard Caleo and Susan Bamford Caleo discuss the two Tango antholgies released in 2009. The first is this year's edition of the Cardigan Comics anthology Tango 9 - Love and War, and then the Allen and Unwin published Tango Collection - featuring highlights from the previous 8 editions of Tango that have been published in the last decade.

Just what happens behind the scenes during the year when two editions of this comic book tome enter the world? A frank discussion of the ins and ous, ups and downs, highlights and lowlights of self publishing an anthology of Australian comics.

Thanks to Bernard, Susan (and neighbour Karen) for taking the time out to let me ask some questions in their living room.
