Steelpan Soloists Light Up Montréal

</title>
	<description>

Recently When Steel Talks found itself in Montréal, Quebec, Canada to cover the annual Montreal International Steelpan Festival. Now in its 9th year, the two–day festival is the brainchild of steelpan activist, organizer and educator Salah Wilson. Mr. Wilson, a seasoned steelpan musician and educator is well known for his musical accomplishments and for the championing of musical literacy in the Quebec area. This first day of the festival opened with a show aptly named 'Steelpan Soloists in Concert.' Featured performers included Clyde 'Lightning' George, Kenrick and Kenneth Headley, Hameed Shaqq the Pan Piper and Mr. Wilson himself.

International Steelband Panorama 2009 - Montreal Style

</title>
	<description>

The 9th Montreal International Steelpan Festival took place at the end of June 2009 in downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The event featured both a junior and adult steelpan panorama with six orchestras in total vying for honors in the categories. With this year's festival barely over, plans are already afoot for a grand 2010 edition of the festival, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary. Event organizer and president of the International Festival is Salah Wilson of Salah's Steelpan Academy; together with his family of steelpan musicians - they are the backbone of this annual steelband event.

	<description>

Thursday June 18, 2009 will long be remembered in the lives of seventeen of the twenty students of the graduating Standard Five Class of the Princes Town Methodist School in Southern Trinidad, WI. Pan Elders Celebrates its Tenth Anniversary

</title>
	<description>

           Elton J.W. Bain, acting chairman Pan Trinbago South/Central Region, said that the region is extremely proud of the progressive outfit that is Pan Elders, celebrating their tenth anniversary this year. In existence since 1999, he says that the band has achieved so much in its comparatively short period of existence. Some achievements include champion status in the Small Band Conventional Category in 2008, ruling the roost at Marabella Republic Competitions and generally performing at the highest levels with placings in the upper end positions under the baton of arranger Alvin Gittens.

            Steelpan Musicians Honor the Ancestors of the Middle Passage at Tribute at Coney Island

</title>
	<description>

           Utopia Pan Soul - The Next Generation celebrated the Ancestors of the Middle Passage on the second Sunday in June through their performance with the musical instrument that more so than any other, represents the true mettle of the African people: their genius, survival, defiance and promise. The steelpan instrument is a gift to the world by the descendants of the millions of Africans who were lost in the Middle Passage as part of that 'coming to America' experience.

An Embarrassment of Riches - Classic Work by Phase II will Haunt me to my Grave
</title>
	<description>

Author Dalton Narine revisits a panorama that was characterized by an 'upset for the ages.' He writes: 'It was absolutely the best Panorama performance I've ever heard. It was music in B sharpe.' Narine is refering to the classic 'Music in We Blood' penned and arranged by legendary musician Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe, and the iconic performance of said selection by his one hundred-twenty strong orchestra of devotees on that momentous night back in 2003 at the Panorama finals at the Queen's Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. For him as he aptly puts it - 'Classic Work by Phase II will haunt me to my Grave.'

Pan Down Under - Australia's "Banana Joe" story points to Trinidad and Tobago as Home of Pan

</title>
	<description>

Former noted Trinidadian soccer player Alvin Rostant - also a steel pan musician - now makes the land Down Under &#8211; Australia - his home. Exasperated at being asked where in Jamaica was Trinidad anytime he played out, Rostant was driven to set the record straight, and in so doing established the Australian Academy of Steel Drums, and scripted two productions for Primary and Secondary School instruction in Australia called Banana Joe and Calypso Drums respectively. In an interview with Hollis Clifton of WACK90.1 FM Radio - Rostant delved more into his relationship with steelpan Down Under.

Invaders wins BIG for TnT at Bajan Pan Competition</title>
	<description>

'Pan in the Oval' held in Barbados was produced by the Kensington Oval in collaboration with Candor Music and is expected to be the main regional pan competition. Some of the criteria on which judges focused were arrangement, rhythmic variations, jam session, creativity, tone/colour, balance of the pans, stage presence, choreography and musical impact. This May 31 inaugural competition saw Invaders Steel Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago come out triumphant from a field of four competing steel orchestras.

As daylight dimmed, on Saturday May 30, the half-moon showered a bright silver glow over the Premier Baptist Church (PBC) at the corner of Tilden and Utica Avenues in Brooklyn, where the Rev. Robert Watler pastors. Inside, parishioners waited patiently past the 7 PM start time for the opening of a fund raising concert featuring Crossfire Steel Orchestra.

The Power of Praise, the Power of Pan

</title>
	<description>

            It was the power of Praise, right alongside the Power of Pan at the Premier Baptist Church (PBC) in Brooklyn last Saturday. The Music director for PBC is Khuent Rose who is also arranger for Crossfire Steel Orchestra. Together with the PBC singers, the band Evidence, vocalist Carle Fouche, and of course Crossfire - the gospel concert which ran for just over two hours was uplifting and enjoyable for those in attendance. When Steel Talks was there to capture higlights.

The Ultimate Dis-Respect: Pan at Lincoln Center - Dead Man Walking?</title>
	<description> It appears that the future of Steelpan music at Lincoln Center may be nothing more than 'Dead Man Walking.' In what has to be one of the most glaring acts of total disregard and one of the ugliest insults the instrument has suffered in its 50-plus year history - Abstract Entertainment, Inc. (AEI) along with its partners BET and Lincoln Center pull off a scallywag move in broad daylight that is both traitorous and deceitful - promotion of its event - PANjazz - without the mention, or image of its steelpan artists supposedly appearing.</description>
