The “birth control agitators” of Union Square

i like to think of myself as a birth control agitator.

Talking about birth control in public was pretty radical stuff in 1916.

But that’s what anarchist, free love advocate, and all-around rule-breaker Emma Goldman (in photo below) and a handful of other “birth control agitators,” as a next-day New York Times article called them, did on May 20 of that year in Union Square.

A crowd of about 500 came to hear them speak.

In the years following this rally, Margaret Sanger became the marquee name associated with the birth control movement. But it was Goldman, who lived on East 13th Street, who was an early pioneer.

She’d already been arrested for violating the 1873 Comstock Law, which prohibited distributing information on contraception.

After an outcry that prompted the Manhattan DA at the time to promise he wouldn’t arrest activists who spoke in a “properly regulated forum,” Goldman and her cohorts set up the Union Square rally.

Betty Meets Barbie as Mattel Launches Mad Men Collector Dolls

As mentioned in the New York Times, Mattel, Inc., Lionsgate, and AMC announced today the launch of four Barbie® Collector Mad Men dolls available to consumers July 2010. Designed by Barbie designer Robert Best, the Mad Men Barbie doll line features key players from the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency: creative director and leading man Don Draper; his wife Betty Draper; Sterling Cooper partner Roger Sterling; and bombshell office manager Joan Holloway. Today's announcement marks the first licensed doll line in the Barbie Fashion Model Collection, a signature silkstone collection within the Barbie brand known for featuring couture quality fashions and accessories.

The Mad Men Barbie Collector doll collection embodies the Mad Men series' couture fashions and accessories, and its iconic '60s style and aesthetic. The series, which is produced by Lionsgate and airs on AMC, has made history with its multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards by chronicling the lives of the men and women of Madison Avenue advertising in the '60s. Season four of Mad Men premieres this summer.

I’m very excited to announce the completion of the first edit of Plume on my new website. I’ll continue to post the travelogue and outtakes here on this blog, but the series is now up for viewing on my site.

The redesign of my website also includes a lot of new work! In addition to Plume, the series Back and Photographs 2009 are new. I’ve been slowing working on War Memorials and put some new work up there. The editorial sections are updated and so is Teaching Documents, a section which displays some of my students’ work.

Individual works from the past few years are also up on the redesigned site. A lot more of that is to come in the following months.

This update represents a lot of time and a lack of a social life, so any feedback on the site design and of course the work and content is much appreciated!
