Dwell in the City - Intentional Christian Community

In each of the DOOR cities, we've gathered together young adults that serve the community. Our Dwell program is a way in which young adults can be a part of an intentional Christian living community. It is open to young adults 18-30 and it takes at least one year commitment. You may already live in the city and wish to be a part of the community house. Or you may be interested in moving to one of our amazing cities. To be apart of the community, you either need to apply. Cities available are Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Hollywood/LA, Miami, and San Antonio.

Announcements for Summer Groups

1. Chicago is almost full. If you are interested in Chicago, please call Christie 303-295-3667 for availability. If you know us, then you know we limit the number of participants to keep the wear on our partners to a minimum.
2. DOOR cities do not usually take weekend groups in the summer months due to the capacities of our summer programs. There are a few exceptions to this. If you're interested in a weekend in Hollywood, again please call Christie 303-295-3667 for availability.
3. As you make your preparations for the summer, consider gathering items you may have locally that can be used in the city. In all our cities, you can bring canned food, children's books, and bring string style back packs.

Spring has Sprung

Spring Break is well upon us. We're hosting groups and we are thrilled to be showing off the work happening in each of our cities.
Hollywood is hosting a private school from Copper Canyon Academy of AZ. Miami is hosting a group of 8th graders from Sarasota Christian School. Chicago has been hosting Grand Valley State and Pepperdine University. San Antonio has Concordia University. Atlanta and Denver are both gearing up for groups. Denver has Central Presbyterian this weekend. Atlanta has been renovating a house and will be hosting two teams next week.
It's fun for us to bring groups along to work with our partner agencies and the various projects and ministries we work with all year around. There is so much to see and do.

'New' Website Coming

This week we will be moving onto new website software. It looks a bit better and contains all the same information and more. The best part- it will be much easier for us to maintain and improve! We apologize in advance if you have any trouble making the switch because you are used to the old site. And there may be a kink or two.
Thank you all for your support and your patience. We hope you'll agree that although websites serve important functions, they aren't as important as people and the work we do in our cities.
Please do not hesitate to call if you need any assistance! We'd rather talk to you instead anyway. :)

It's crunch time for group registrations. Many folks are sending in their registrations at this time, so we have disabled the 'availability calendar.'
Emerging from our staff meetings recharged

Last week the DOOR staff gathered in Chicago, in Faith House, to share, inform, learn, discuss. These times are much more than meetings. Instead they are a time to reconnect and pray together. We share burdens and encourage each other in new ideas, current struggles and future possibilities.
It was great to have Eduardo Vargas with us. Eduardo is our newest addition in San Antonio and he's not new at all. Eduardo has been serving and leading with Door San Antonio and SALSA for many years. We're glad to have him on staff.

Reflections from a Dweller

From JJ Jordan serving on the Miami team;
After three trips of working sunup to sundown and then a 5-day action packed conference, I had become pretty exhausted. I've spent the last few weeks now slowing down, recovering and thinking a lot about living at a sustainable pace. We are called to carry our crosses and suffer for Christ, but I think it's easy to mistake busyness for suffering. Sure, it's hard and exhausting to be busy, but in the midst of all that it's so easy to forget about God and lose contact with Him. It's so easy for it to become my efforts and my work to please God. I can get so wrapped up in "doing things for God" that I neglect to stay in relationship with Him. And once I'm out of touch with the Head, my Spirit-filled love centered actions so quickly become nothing more than self-centered human strivings. Each day I have to make sure I'm not just running aimlessly but that I'm carrying the cross God has for me to bear. Maybe it means I'll do less, but I trust that being near to God I will accomplish more.

That means we have full time local city directors but also it means we answer to a local board of directors. For oversight of the network, our national board of directors is made of 2 representatives of each city as well as our national ministry partners. We are so thankful for the dedication & inspiration of these pastors, social workers, teachers & business professionals! Not only do they prayerfully guide our steps, but they inspire new ideas and growth in all areas of DOOR.

We are in the midst of saying hello to our Dwellers, year long volunteers serving as a team, alongside ministries and agencies for a year. It's a wonderful time of getting to know them and helping them to learn their new city! Teams are serving in Atlanta, Hollywood, Miami and San Antonio this year.
Gratitude

Here at DOOR we are grateful for the neighborhoods that host us in each of our six cities. From the welcoming smiles of the folks on the block in Chicago to the understanding new hosts in Miami, the community involvement in Hollywood to the amazing seamtresses in San Antonio who help the whole network, the long history of hosting in Denver to the gracious nature of Atlanta we are grateful for our hosts. Thanks be to God.

What is your DOOR experience?

Each week participants are given the opportunity to respond to their week. Here is one reflection from DOOR Denver.

“In scripture the sewer casts the seed and it goes everywhere. We tend to want to cast/plant seed only ion the most fertile soil. DOOR provides such a variety of opportunities to serve that we get to cast seed everywhere and are sometimes surprised by where the fertile soil really is. Often it is closer than we think.”
Stephen Deutsch from Dexter, NM
