<p>The short meteoric story of AppThwack is the kind of which startup dreams are made. Two kids executing on a really really good idea.</p>
<p>We join our heroes at Intel. They’ve built a platform called Trellis that allows them to test code on any physical device. They realize that the rapidly fragmenting Android market could be a great starting point to launch Trellis. And so AppThwack is born. The company is accepted to both <a href="http://piepdx.com" title="PIE">PIE</a> and <a href="http://portlandseedfund.com" title="Portland Seed Fund">Portland Seed Fund</a>. They get funding, led by then newly founded <a href="http://roguevp.com" title="Rogue Venture Partners">Rogue Venture Partners</a>, and including Upstart Labs, TiE Angels, and more. They wind up getting business from the Federal Government. And then Portland merger and acquisition expert <a href="http://mergertech.com" title="MergerTech">MergerTech</a> helps the team sell the company to Amazon.</p>
<p>All within the span of a few years. Not bad, Portland. Not bad at all. Reminds me of the <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2013/06/07/told-meridians-26-million-cash-exit-incredibly-important-portland-startup-scene/" title="Now it can be told: Why Meridian’s $26 million all cash exit is incredibly important for the Portland startup scene">Meridian acquisition story</a>. And it reminds me that Portland can do this. Exceptionally well.</p>
<p>“This is a great story for the whole Portland startup ecosystem,” said Tom Sperry of Rogue Ventures. “We always highlight what a collaborative and collegial community this is. And this is the kind of success we realize when we focus collaboration on promising founders executing on compelling ideas.”</p>
<p>Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But folks close to the deal have been said to be sporting incredibly big smiles. So there’s that.</p>

<p>But it’s starting to happen. Slowly but surely. </p>

<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>Like today. When serial entrepreneur Raven Zachary <a href="http://objecttheory.com/blog/2015/7/6/welcome-to-object-theory" title="Object Theory">announced his new startup, Object Theory</a>. It’s a shop that will focus on building applications for a platform which shows amazing potential—but is, as of yet, unproven.</p>
<p>Sound familiar? It should. This is the exact same thing that happened with Raven’s last venture, <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2009/03/31/small-society-iphone-agency-raven-zachary-james-keller/" title="Small Society">Small Society</a>. That began a small no-name development shop that focused on <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2009/02/05/no-name-iphone-agency-starts-with-two-big-names-raven-zachary-and-james-keller/" title="No-name iPhone agency starts with two big names: Raven Zachary and James Keller">building elegant apps for the then nascent iPhone market</a>. </p>
<p>I mean, I don’t even think they were even calling it iOS back then, were they?</p>
<p>But they helped build that market. Especially for big brands. </p>
<p>In fact, the team did <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2009/10/06/silicon-forest-iphone-app-air-sharing-zipcar/" title="From Air Sharing to Zipcar: 40+ iPhone apps developed in the Silicon Forest">such amazing work</a> that <a href="http://siliconflorist.com/2012/01/04/quintessential-portland-ios-shop-small-society-acquired-walmart-labs/" title="Quintessential Portland iOS shop Small Society acquired by Walmart Labs">Small Society was snapped up in its prime by Walmart Labs</a>.</p>
<h3>Introducing Object Theory, a <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us" title="Microsoft HoloLens">Microsoft HoloLens</a> development shop</h3>
<p>But enough nostalgia. Raven’s new venture—cofounded with one of the few HoloLens veterans, Michael Hoffman, a former principal engineering lead from the Microsoft HoloLens Studios team, and a Portlander who had been commuting to Redmond to work—will be focused on the yet to be released augmented reality platform. </p>
<blockquote><p>We are uniquely positioned to help organizations design, develop, and launch mixed reality applications for Microsoft HoloLens. Our leadership team has already delivered projects for Microsoft HoloLens and other mobile platforms. We work with clients, from inception through launch and beyond, including software development, user experience, design, quality assurance, training, deployment, maintenance, and support.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Our initial focus is partnering with organizations interested in creating launch day ready HoloLens applications.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>We have prepared a basic informational site while we finalize our design. Please wear your HoloLens now to view our site in holographic mode. ☺</p></blockquote>
<p>And people seem to be taking notice:</p>

<blockquote><p>The company is self funded by its two founders. Raven Zachary founded iPhoneDevCamp in 2007, was director of the Obama ’08 iPhone app, and formed Small Society, a mobile app development company sold to Walmart in 2012. Michael Hoffman, Object Theory’s other founder, was the engineering lead for Microsoft’s HoloLens and worked on the NASA Mars demo as well as other partnerships.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>The duo believes the HoloLens platform and the app market that will accompany could rival the ways the iPhone release affected today’s mobile app market.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>“We are going to be the first to focus on HoloLens,” Zachary said. “But we fully expect that by the time the product launches, there will be dozens of companies just like ours building enterprise and vertical market apps for the HoloLens. And we are excited about that.”</p></blockquote>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>I was asked a compensation question by a startup today: Early on, when salaries are low, what's a reasonable amount of stock compensation to offer? In this case, it was for a COO position and a marketing management position. </p><p>
Stock compensation is always a challenging question for post-founder additions to a startup (and for founders too, for that matter!) And whatever numbers you quote, there will always be exceptions (and disagreements) but here are the typical ranges I've seen, expressed as percentage of the (fully diluted) company stock for very early stage startups:
<ul>
<li>CEO: 4% to 8%
</li>
<li>COO and CTO: 3% to 5%
</li>
<li>Other Cxx positions: 2% to 3%
</li>
<li>VP of Engineering: 2% to 4%
</li>
<li>Other VPs: 1.5% to 3%
</li>
<li>Director positions: 0.75% to 1.5%
</li>
<li>Key engineering positions: 0.75% to 1.5%
</li>
</ul>
<p> Of course, there are lots of variables. For example, if the company is later stage, and the salary is at or close to market-level, then the stock ownership could easily be a smaller percentage. For some additional perspective on founder stock and stock options, see the <a href="http://www.oregonstartups.com/decide_on_stock_ownership.html">Decide on Stock Ownership</a> section of the Oregonstartups.com <a href="http://www.oregonstartups.com/startup_roadmap.html">Startup Road Map</a>.
</p>
<p>
Odds are, your experience is different than mine. So what levels of stock-option compensation have you seen in early stage startups?

What You Forgot Was My Fault") suggests that social media is not so great for memory, or for grades in school:
<blockquote>Our brain works hard to fool us into thinking it can do more than one thing at a time. It can't. Recent MRI studies at Vanderbilt prove that the brain is not built for good multi-tasking. When trying to do two things at once, the brain temporarily shuts down one task while trying to do the other.
...
So what has this got to do with memory? Well,if you try to memorize the first task and the brain immediately switches to the second task, performance of the second task interferes with consolidation of the memory of the first task.
...
A study of 517 California high-school students found that grades were lower in those who socially interacted via MySpace, instant messaging (IM) accounts, or who used cell phones.</blockquote>
And I thought my increasingly fuzzy memory was just one of those "getting older" things... </div><div class="feedflare">

They are calling themselves the Innovation Matrix, and I encourage west-side startups who are looking for space to check them out!
</p><p>
Here's the release:
</p><p>
As a sign of the times, several early stage technology companies have found new ways to cooperate and manage resources.
</p><p>
Six technology companies have joined together to form The Innovation Matrix, a facility in Cornell Oaks Business Park in which these early stage companies share more than space. The six companies include three optical technology companies – Lumencor, Tau Science, and UVCleaning Systems. Three other companies are Klassic, Zubeo, and TechSpi, all who are or were involved in the OTBC, which relocated recently to a new facility in the Round in downtown Beaverton. The six companies decided to rent a facility together, and along the way have found other creative ways to cooperate, minimize expenses, and maximize resources.
</p><p>
Steven Jaffe, CEO of Lumencor, who is developing a light source for biotech instruments like DNA sequencers, identified a common theme among the group of companies – all were having a difficult time finding high quality space with room to grow, and all enjoyed the camaraderie of other companies in the early stages of growth. “The OTBC was great for coaching us in the early stages, but several of us have some investors, product to build, and customers to support, and needed some room to grow”. Steven approached Darci Duffy, the Sr Director of Leasing for PS Business parks with a proposal – could a group of companies rent a portion of a building, leaving adjacent room to grow? Darci liked the idea, and the companies agreed to pool their resources and rent a 5000 sqft facility in the Cornell Oaks Business parks, and call it “The Innovation Matrix”. The Lumencor team did the heavy lifting in the setup and move, and are subleasing to the other companies.
</p><p>
Mark Owen, CEO of UVCleaning Systems, a company building water purification systems that destroy contaminants with light activated coatings, liked the potential synergy of the idea. “We’d been working closely with Lumencor already, and have shared investor connections, business plans, suppliers, and even engineers and equipment. We’re discussing quantity buys on shared components, sharing financial advisors, and other service providers”. Mark also keeps the kitchen well supplied and organizes community service projects.
</p><p>
Jamie Hudson, President of Tau Science, a company developing high speed inspection for solar cell manufacturers, also joined in. “The quality of the space exceeded others we found and we are able to leverage the in-house light engine and semiconductor equipment experience in our development.”
</p><p>
David Smith, CEO of Techspi, felt it was an ideal location for their Next-Generation Cloud IT Services initiative, now in the first stage of beta testing. “It was a natural fit to move this portion of our business in with these other innovative companies and to work with several of them as beta clients as we enter the next phase in 2009". David finds there are additional benefits to the Matrix. "While Techspi has been in business serving the SMB and local government markets since 1997, this next-gen initiative is nonetheless very much a startup, and the association with the other companies in the Matrix can be both encouraging and intellectually stimulating, and walking next door to chat with Steven at 10:30 PM can make the day seem a little bit shorter...." Techspi installed and maintains the network infrastructure in the Matrix.
</p><p>
Kevin Ulam, CEO of Zubeo, a SW company developing personalized MP3 Audio, created The Innovation Matrix website, and has hired a new employee recommended by one of the other tenants. “It is great to have the camaraderie of a shared office, conference space, and the encouragement to try different ideas”.
</p><p>
Miguel Mendez, CEO of Klassic, a gourmet food delivery company, that applies state of art IT systems and package delivery techniques to make gourmet food ordering and delivery as easy and quick as ordering pizza delivery, was unanimously voted into the Matrix. "I think they are hoping I will bring them food", he joked, "and actually, we will need some product test trials soon".
